Elizabeth May

Public Panel Results - After the Debates

Elizabeth May’s overall profile remains unchanged post the public debates. Similar to Layton, her image on all of the profiles done to date has remained fairly constant. She has a pioneering profile. She seeks to be at the cutting edge of change. She is one of the few people equally ready to develop new ideas on her own or in conjunction with others. She scores the lowest of any leader on the Implementer role. The strength of this role is the ability to implement in a practical manner.

Public Panel Results - September 30, 2008

Elizabeth May’s overall profile remained virtually unchanged but some words showed dramatically increased scores. Territorial, sceptical, tough and inflexible were chosen far more often in her latest profile. It would appear that people are increasingly viewing her as a very hard driving, single minded leader. Will this garner votes on October 14th?

Public Panel Results - September 12, 2008

Public perception corresponds very closely to that of the experts for Elizabeth May. She essentially has a pioneering profile. Her operating style is that of one who always seeks to be at the cutting edge of change. She is one of the few people equally ready to develop new ideas on her own or in conjunction with others.

One difference between the experts and the public’s view of her is with respect to the Coordinator (CO) role. The public sees her as being adept at using a consultative style of leadership in which she is conscious of priorities and broad in outlook. As mentioned in the expert section, her best line of work is one in which she is required to explore possibilities and to take advantage of new opportunities.  She has features of being visionary in her leadership. But she needs to take care not to become isolated from others and resistant to the contributions they can make to the development of what is new.
Her role as leader of the Green Party of Canada suits her team role profile very well.

The readiness of the Canadian electorate to embrace change will be an important factor that will significantly impact on her success. If the electorate is ready, she would have the right profile to drive change with her two top team roles of Resource Investigator (RI) and Plant (PL). The descriptor Plant was coined by Meredith Belbin when he decided to call very creative, imaginative people Plants because in his research on team roles he "planted" highly creative individuals in teams and saw immediate improvements in results.

Her success will be influenced by her ability to remain focused and not try too many things at the same time. It would be important for her to be able to demonstrate versatility by playing to either her third and fourth roles of Shaper (SH) and Coordinator (CO) when the occasion calls for it. Noting that the public sees her as a strong CO, she would be advised to make sure to separate the use of the PL and CO roles. They do not function well when used simultaneously. Contributing all the ideas and coordinating others are very difficult functions to combine effectively.

She should work with advisors who have strong Monitor Evaluator (ME) skills. This role would complement her visionary style with well grounded analysis and strategic thinking. Implementer (IMP) and others with CO skills would also complement her style well.
